LA MARIA COFFEE - ROASTED FOR ARTERIA BY ATKINSONS

LA MARIA @ ARTERIA £6.99 250g ground – THE PERFECT FIT FOR OUR #FIKA #GALLERY #EXHIBITION

Super citrussy orange and black currant. Well balanced with a bright medium acidity, pleasingly sweet satsuma & walnut whip

ATKINSONS SAY  OF THIS BLEND:-

It certainly comes to us with good provenance. Nurtured by a family that cares about its product, in an environment that ticks all the boxes that great coffee demands. For, after all, the coffee plant can be a fickle and demanding mistress, requiring a very narrow margin of Altitude, Temperature, Precipitation and Soil in which to truly flourish and the stats for this farm provide damn near perfect parameters. Most importantly of all we know our coffee is in safe hands, with Don Omar and his other brave souls going about their daily business on the farm, at times gruelling, at times rewarding but content in the knowledge that they will be especially rewarded with the higher price that separation dictates and that it is going to a good home, where it will be fully appreciated.

ORIGIN =  COLOMBIA, ANSERMA

DAISY + DOT TINNED CANDLES – £10 @ ARTERIA

Daisy and Dot is a small company based in the rural Lake District. We hand make lovely candles; they smell fabulous, burn beautifully and look pretty too.

Hand poured natural soy wax with cotton wicks, mixed in small batches with distinct and unusual quality fragrances, inspired by family life in rural England whether that’s rhubarb crumble and custard following Sunday Roast Dinner or a well deserved Gin and Tonic after the kids have gone to bed!

KNOCKER JOTTERS AVAILABLE @ ARTERIA £10 ALL PROCEEDS TO CANCERCARE

KNOCKER JOTTERS AVAILABLE @ ARTERIA £10 ALL PROCEEDS TO CANCERCARE

Two breast cancer survivors known as the Scarletts have launched a unique project to raise awareness of cancer surgery, treatment and life beyond the disease, as well as vital funds for the charity who gave them support.

A few months ago Andrea Partridge, CancerCare’s Volunteer and Engagement Co-ordinator, and Sarah Drake, a volunteer at the charity, met a lady who was about to undergo surgery as part of her treatment for breast cancer. She was terrified at the prospect – scarring, types of reconstruction, losing her femininity – all things that hundreds of women with a cancer diagnosis face every day.

Andrea and Sarah (aka The Scarletts) have both been through the same illness. They took time to talk to her, even showing her their scars, and this reassurance and support was enough to help her make decisions about her own treatment choices.
This act led to the beginnings of an inspirational project – The ‘Knocker Jotter’.

Everyone in the ‘Knocker Jotter’ is a member of Phoenix (an online support group supported by Lancaster based charity CancerCare) and has been, or is, going through the harrowing journey of cancer, the diagnosis, the treatment, the side effects and living with them all.

Cancer, and particularly, breast cancer, attempts to strip women of their physicality, visual identity, taking their hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, nails and on many occasions, their breasts, leaving behind physical and mental scars. The ‘Scarletts’ wanted to share their personal experiences and let others know that whatever they may be going through, others have also faced it and no one needs to feel alone.

“Through the portraits in the Jotter, we wanted to take back ownership of our bodies, to share our scars and our new selves, to be proud of who we are, the journeys we have been on and the new women we have become.”

“The time spent together during the photo shoot was a significantly empowering experience. We shared our journeys, our fears, our tears, our hopes, our scars. We hope as others fill in the pages of the journal our stories, our words and our portraits will help empower them on their journey.”

ARTERIA ARTISAN – JENNY McCABE

ARTERIA ARTISAN - JENNY McCABE

“I have always been a visual artist, working in a variety of different mediums and settings. For the last 11 years I have worked constantly with printmaking. I have used screen printing for many years to transfer my drawings on to fabric and paper, playing with layers or colour and collaged papers to reference my subject’s colour’s and
textures.”

“All my work starts with drawing, it is the basis of everything, my aim is to capture my subjects movement and energy and communicating those idea in messy gestural lines.”

“I have more recently begun to work with master printer – Iain Sloan at Ironpress printmaking in the Storey Lancaster. Learning new printmaking techniques, Etchings and dry points where I can learn to use my mark making in a different way, building up lines and textures on the metal plates, and respecting traditions and age old skills.”

“Also a process that has captured my imagination called Collagraphy – a technique using simple cardboard and glue to create a printing plate by scoring into the card and sticking layers to the surface, creating the textures needed to hold the ink and achieve a print. I love the fact it is very lo-fi and accessible to anyone- I find what you can make a piece of card do amazing!”

“My work always has a focus on wildlife and nature, simply because of its endless supply of fascinating subjects!”

“This body of work is the beginnings of a large study of the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) an often overlooked common garden bird, I have huge affection for them and their jagged angular appearance, their often aggressive mob like behaviour and of course their incredible flocking producing breath taking murmuration’s of thousands of birds in the autumn skies.”
