CHARITY DESIGN COMPETITION! - 23/06/2010

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

How could you re-invent the humble cardboard box? Would you embellish it or deconstruct it and make it into something else?

At Arteria with Gallery 23 we invite you to "UNBOX" your ideas and take part in our first ever deign competition. A donation of £2.00 is required to take part which will be presented to St John's Hospice in Lancaster.

A panel of local artists which includes Patricia Haskey Knowles (St John's Hospice Artist of the Year) Liz Collinson, Lee Metcalfe and Susan Armistead will select 6 finalists whose work will then be displayed at Arteria and put to the public vote!

Prizes include a £50 voucher, your work to be put on display with the potential to sell, and you will be part of the judging panel for the next year's competition.

This is an open invitation, no age limit applies and if you have never had any design training this competition still wants you!

So why not pick up an entry form and box from 5th July at our Brock Street shop and GET CREATIVE IT'S FOR A GREAT CAUSE!!!

The lidded cardboard boxes were kindly donated by Elro Packaging

WISH YOU WERE THERE? - 19/06/2010

The Preview for the Summer Exhibition "Wish You Were Here" was a great success. The weather was lovely and fitting as we served Pimms through the course of the evening.

The feedback was very pleasing as again it was noted the true variety of styles the artists, designers and makers had brought to the event. It was also great to have so many of the exhibitors on hand to talk to visitors.

Here are a few snaps of the evening:-

......an exhibitor of prestigious artists aswell as fresh new talent!. We are proud to present our "Seaside" window display encompassing the work of two very highly regarded North West artists.

Jack Doherty is classed as one of the best British potters around. In a review from the National Craft Gallery his pieces were decribed as;

"Survivors. Not in the defeated sense, more that they had emerged from the ferocity which fire and soda can impart combined with dignity, to create absolutely bespoke forms and surface" (Michael Moore)

James Bartholomew is a member of the Royal Society of Marine Arts (RMSA) and of the Manchester Academy of Fine Art (MAFA) His seascape and landscape paintings have collected several award including the Charles Pears Award and the Sir Peter Scott Award.

Work has also been commissioned by The Times, The British Tourist Authority, The BBC, and Bonhams. Arteria regulars may be familiar with his Cow Paintings which have been very popular with our customers.

The "Sam Effect!" - 08/03/2010

Artist, photographer and designer - what a signing! Our very own Sam Miller Gott who joined us in 2009 makes her mark as an artist at the “Fresh” @ Gallery 23 Exhibition.

Her work is a mix of vintage and modern; silhouettes and collage. She creates images and wall sculptures from old books and found objects.

You will also see the “Sam effect” on our invitation designs for this show as she is an absolute wizard on all things Adobe (Photoshop). Her ideas and input have given a real lift to our promotional material for this Spring exhibition.

Well done Sam!

"ARTERIA - ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SHOPS IN LANCASTER" - 04/02/2010

Judith Coyle is a well respected Lancaster based writer and editor who originally trained as a journalist.

She has a fab new website and blog spot and we are thrilled to have been given such a positive mention on it! If you follow the link below you can see Judith's blog in full but here is the super entry Judith has put together about us.

Just wanted to share this pic of one of Lancaster's most popular arty, craftsy shops which we visit quite often. Arteria with Gallery 23 is owned by Jane Richardson who won the Business Rocks Business Woman of the Year award for 2008. The annual event, organised by our very own Chamber of Commerce along with Bay Business Centre, Business Link and Rotaract, recognises local businesses which are making a difference to our city. Jane’s achievement is particularly impressive in that her business is just 4 ½ years old and she began it at the relatively young age of 25. In that time she and her team have made the Arteria shop, which sells design-led gifts, and the contemporary art gallery upstairs, one of Lancaster’s most respected shops.
