“APRICITY” – A NEW SEASONAL GALLERY EXHIBITION @ ARTERIA

APRICITY – “The Warmth of the Sun in Winter” – A Seasonal Gallery Exhibition @ Arteria

The word Apricity is an obsolete English term from 1623 and simply means “The warmth of the sun in winter” A word we would like to revive for our latest Gallery exhibition

When the winter season sparks a chill in the air and the evening light becomes brief we find comfort in warmth and illumination, we find comfort in opposites. Whether it is the sun casting long shadows across a frosty landscape or the ambient glow from candlelight in an otherwise dimly lit room.

Our winter exhibition at Arteria embraces the change of season and celebrates those delights that we find outdoors and within the home.

We have lovingly sourced handmade gifts for all the family that are thoughtfully created by local and national artisans. From handcrafted decorations to wall art, in Apricity you will find a selection of truly unique pieces.

The show runs from Thursday 11th October to Saturday 5th January with a special Winter Shopping Day on Sunday 25th November from 12 noon until 3pm.

For more information you can contact Arteria on 01524 61111 or email info@arteriashop.co.uk

You will also find regular updates on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and at www.arteriashop.co.uk

NEW PATRICIA HASKEY PIECES FOR “UPCYCLE RECYCLE” GALLERY EXHIBITION

Permanent exhibitor Patricia Haskey has just added to her collection of works featuring in our “UPCYCLE  RECYCLE” exhibition. Here she talks about the inspiration for her latest works. The show runs until 6th October

“We are becoming more conscious of the fact that we have to look after and nurture this amazing planet of ours and reflecting on the theme of ‘UPCYCLE – RECYCLE’ I wanted to celebrate the resurgence of our beautiful meadows and protected nature reserves.”

“These pictures have been created using multi-media of recycled paper and elements of previous paintings studies. The frames too have been made from saved off-cuts from other projects and are FSC certified.”

A NEW GALLERY SHOW “UPCYCLE-RECYCLE” CREATED WITH CONSCIENCE

“We live on a blue planet that circles around a ball of fire next to a moon that moves the sea, and you don’t believe in miracles?” (Anonymous – origin unknown)

Over time we have been a less than respectful tenant of our shared space. There is, however, a collective consciousness to do more now to protect and restore. The impact of consumerism, manufacture and packaging on our environment is a necessary hot topic in the press and in our day to day dialogue. As a commercial retailer and Gallery space we hear the thoughts from both suppliers and customers and in turn observe a concerted effort being made to produce with a conscience and to purchase mindfully.

We have a duty of care to the planet wherever we place ourselves within the consumer chain. It has certainly had an impact on our sourcing practice. Putting green initiatives in to practice is palpable within the artistic and handmade sector. Statements of environmentalism, use of sustainable materials and the creation of something new from the used are all ways in which creative practitioners are expressing their allegiance. It is an ideology that we wanted to be the focus of our latest Gallery exhibition.

UPCYCLE – RECYCLE is a showcase celebrating art, design and craft that is created with conscience. The exhibits are the works of predominantly local and national artists and makers. It features wall art, plinth work, textile and gift all of which is handmade with the environment front of mind. The mix is eclectic and will be indicative of how refined and desirable up cycled and recycled creation can be.

The ethos is being carried through to the marketing of the event. The invitation to the show is being sent digitally and those who are on the postal mailing list will receive a postcard to eliminate the use of an envelope. The card itself is 100% recycled and manufactured with wind power and the font used for the exhibition is an “eco-font” which only uses half the ink.

The exhibition at Arteria with Gallery 23 runs from 17th May through to 6th October 2018 with a preview event on Thursday 17th May from 5pm-7pm.

You can find out more by contacting the Gallery on 01524 61111 or emailing info@arteriashop.co.uk

Jenny McCabe “Quarrel of Sparrows” solo window display

It is always an exciting moment for Arteria when we get a call from local Printmaker Jenny McCabe to say she has been working on a new body of prints. Always!  Jenny is so accomplished and innovative at her craft that we welcome the fruits of her labour with open arms.

To celebrate Jenny’s latest creations we are hosting a solo window display an occasion also worthy of a solo newsletter. So here we are.

The new collections of prints are etchings with a “Quarrel of Sparrows” being the chosen subject matter.

Her technique sees aluminium metal plates cut out using a jewellery saw to achieve the intricacy in detail. The plates are then etched in copper sulphate, a long process that involves carefully painting out areas with resistant materials and then submerging the plate in to the chemicals many times to build up the desired lines and tones.

The plate is printed using many different coloured inks blended on the surface and printed onto damp paper using a traditional press – putting the plate and paper under extreme pressure.

The pieces are produced at master Printmaker Iain Sloan’s studio space at The Storey Lancaster. Iron Press Printmaking is a resource for experienced printmakers and a place for interested beginners to learn a range of printmaking skills.

The results are truly stunning and we feel very privileged to be showcasing them. Jenny is a permanent exhibitor with the Gallery and as such has featured previously as one of our “Arteria Artisans.”

The window display will be in situ from 4th until 17th May.

For more information about Jenny’s work and other artists and makers featured in our Gallery please contact us on 01524 61111 or email info@arteriashop.co.uk

FIKA (Fee-Ka)

Gallery Exhibition + Winter Shopping Day at Arteria

“Functioning as both a verb and a noun, the concept of Fika is simple. It is the moment that you take a break, often with a cup of coffee, but alternatively with tea, and find a baked treat to pair with it. You can do it alone; you can do it with friends. You can do it at home, in a park or at work. But the essential thing is that you do it, that you make time to take a break: that’s what Fika is all about.”

Fika is taking a moment to slow down and appreciate the good things in life.

We have gathered the beautiful, the comforting and the functional to inspire a season of self nurturing and quality time with friends and family.

We are hosting items of simple luxury and those handcrafted essentials that will be treasured fondly. We hope to inspire you to focus on the detail and to remind us all that the greatest gift you can give yourself and others is time to just be….

Fika will feature wall art, mixed media gifts for all the family and stunning hand thrown ceramic pieces. Come and join us in our first floor Gallery.

Fika is the theme of our Gallery Exhibition and Winter Shopping day at Arteria

The FIKA exhibition runs from 12th October until 6th January

The FIKA WINTER SHOPPING DAY is on Sunday 26th November from 12-3pm
