RICHARD SHILLING (LAND ART FOR KIDS) EXHIBITOR “OUT & ABOUT” @ ARTERIA WITH GALLERY 23

My work usually consists of ephemeral sculptures made from natural materials that are gathered from the area near to where each sculpture is made. Nothing artificial is used in the sculpture, no string or glue or anything else not found in nature. The sort of materials I use include stone, pebbles, leaves, earth, wood, bracken, thorns, ice, snow, water and anything else that mother nature can provide. I make my sculptures in the beautiful places of the North West of England, near to Lancaster where I live, in Cumbria, in Yorkshire and sometimes in other places such as Scotland, the Himalaya and anywhere else I find myself.

Each image is captured in natural light, using normal camera equipment, standard photography techniques and have received a minimum of post-processing save for normal darkroom practices. It is important to me that my images accurately portray how each sculpture looked at the time. Each image shows real colours, real places and real sculptures exactly as they appeared when the photo was taken.

For me the process is all-important. Through making land art sculptures I can immerse myself in the environment, peel back the layers of what is already there, feel the elements in my core and make many new and fascinating discoveries. Since I was small I have always had a great love for nature, always wandering in the woods, fields and forests and through my art I continue to deepen my relationship with Mother Nature.

I am particularly interested in the seasons and cycles of nature, how things change, birth, rebirth and death, the transience of everything around us and the brevity of our existence. By using and investigating ephemeral materials from nature I hope to deepen my understanding of all these things.

I regularly work with children and adults of all ages and perform workshops for schools, groups and individuals and provide master classes.

JAY BIRD – EXHIBITOR “OUT & ABOUT” @ ARTERIA WITH GALLERY 23

Soft sculptures inspired by wildlife, the shores of Morecambe Bay and a love of textiles. Using recycled fabrics and materials, each bird is hand and machine stitched and mounted on locally collected driftwood.

There is an essence of whimsy to the birds mixed with the contours and twists of the driftwood.

Jay Ingram-Seal is working as a full-time artist, mother and wife. She can be found combing the beaches of Morecambe Bay.

KIMBERLI WERNER “THE RED CORVID” EXHIBITOR “OUT & ABOUT” @ ARTERIA WITH GALLERY 23

Kimberli Werner is a North Yorkshire based multimedia artist currently concentrating on paper-craft. Her studio, The Red Corvid, features recycled card stock in every greetings card, journal and framed artwork.

Kimberli is self-taught in paper-cutting, and she presently specialises in wildlife and natural silhouettes. By hand cutting each layer separately, her attention to detail is elemental and provides a richly textured surface to each piece. This technique also leads to each card and artwork being truly original, unique, and contemporary. Silhouettes may look familiar, but are rendered off-beat and unconventional by the use of colour, texture, and various salvaged maps.

The latest addition to her line of paper-craft includes greetings cards that are printed from the original paper-cuts. The cards continue to show off the texture and layering of the original.
She is continually inspired by the rural landscapes, history, flora and fauna of North Yorkshire.

SHOW RUNS UNTIL 8TH OCTOBER

ROSIE ANDRE – EXHIBITOR “OUT & ABOUT” @ ARTERIA WITH GALLERY 23

Rosanna André is originally from Lancaster, but moved to the South of France to be with her French husband a couple of years ago.

With a strong passion for photography, Rosanna set up Provence Photography in 2015.

Although her professional work is mostly portraits, weddings and day trips in Provence, she also loves photographing the French architecture, landscapes and cities.

Rosanna loves the colours and textures found in the sun bleached buildings, which inspired her final collection for her Textiles degree in 2011.

HER WORKS ARE PRINTED ON HD METAL ALUMINIUM AND ARE SUITABLE FOR HANGING INDOORS OR OUTDOORS – WASHABLE AND NON SCRATCH

EMMA CALVERT – EXHIBITOR “OUT & ABOUT” @ ARTERIA WITH GALLERY 23

Award winning jeweller Emma Calvert creates bold textile jewellery by fusing traditional techniques with sculptural forms and contemporary colours. Combining textiles with precious metals, she explores the idea of making two-dimensional fabric into a three-dimensional form through weaving, folding and knotting.
Working with a variety of fabrics, ribbons are intricately folded by hand using decorative knotting techniques. Each piece is then carefully finished with handmade silverwork that complements the graphic shape of the textiles.

Drawing inspiration from cities across Europe, elements of fashion, fine art and history are referenced in Emma’s colour palette. A recent trip to Palermo in Sicily inspired the colours for her current collection with a visit to the Cappella Palatina and it’s intricate mosaics.

ANASTASIA MARTYN – EXHIBITOR “OUT & ABOUT” @ ARTERIA WITH GALLERY 23

“My name is Anastasia Martyn of Silver Wren & Oak and I work mainly with silver and copper. I use a medium known as silver art clay, invented by Japanese scientists, using recycled silver particles and a binding agent – the silver clay is 99% silver and 1% binding agent. This gives a greater degree of scope for creativity and is wonderful to work with. I love producing organic leaves with this method – a process of layer upon layer of silver clay upon an actual leaf, which is then fired in a kiln at high temperature, burning away the actual leaf and leaving its shape in perfect form in 99% silver.

I also produce 3D sculpture pendants, organic seashell shaped pendants and incorporate stumbled glass and sea tumbled pottery in my creations, which are all inspired by nature.

I first learned the basics of silversmithing in 2001 at Slyndales Cancercare in Lancaster. A great place that offers therapies for cancer sufferers including silversmithing, art, counselling and holistic therapies. I am “sand grown” from Morecambe, and I have moved away in the past and now moved back home to the north of England and so glad to be back in this wonderful and beautiful part of the world. “

SHOW RUNS UNTIL 8TH OCTOBER

R. SIMON DALTON – EXHIBITOR “OUT & ABOUT” @ ARTERIA WITH GALLERY 23

R. Simon Dalton is a local photographer, although the locale does not form the core body of his work, which tends to come from larger city and urban locations. His interests lie primarily in recording the mundane and everyday aspects of life and its environs, and to thereby reflect what he believes is a precious – but generally undervalued – part of what it is ‘to be’.

His main influences come from Existentialist philosophy, which he studied at Lancaster University, and the photography of such luminaries as Stephen Shore, William Eggleston and Martin Parr. He is a member of Morecambe Artist Colony.

Jenny (COO & CO) is a visual artist based in Lancaster who is a permanent exhibitor at ARTERIA WITH GALLERY 23

“In my current artwork I use a lot of printing techniques, I love the freedom it gives me to repeat and layer my drawings.”

Wildlife and nature feature a lot in her work, combining drawings, collage and print making, using “messy” gestural lines to capture the energy and movement of the subjects.

“I use layers of vintage paper to build up the tones and textures of my subject, I love the happy accidents that occur with the placement of collage– lines and colours of the paper referencing the original subject but also creating something new and different.”
